If you want to add natural water softening to your system, add 2" of a 50/50 mix of perlite and sphagnum peat moss to the top of the planter. This is not a requirement, it only aids in trapping excess calcium and magnesium in your water, and also adds humic and tanic acid to your water to help keep pH and algae levels down.
