These are filled with straight perlite and flood and drained for 15 mins, every 2 hours with the fish-water from below. The large bin on the right is set up to flow and drain constantly, while keeping the level of nutrient rich water at about half-way, which is about 3". The upper column(3") in the bin will remain unflooded, yet moistened by the wicking properties of the perlite. The bins on the left, however, are about 12" deep, so we can harvest root crops there.
Well, we do have a shade top set up, and I have not seen them go anywhere near it. I do think that I will put up some sort of barrier to prevent the perching you describe.

That cant be safe.Chicken perches on edge and puts e.coli in system. Ouch! Nothing should come in contact with your grow setup,even a passing bird over head.
