Yeah, good point. Wool seems more applicable. Something that still holds voids for air to reach the root mass.

you'd want to make sure the cotton had been stripped/washed of all synthetic dyes...those chemicals are very toxic!  it could work though...maybe.  although cotton is known for not holding its structure/loft well when wet and that would translate into a big soggy anaerobic mess.  wool would be better.

I wonder if a recycled cotton product would work about the same. There is a company in CO that recycles denim and uses it as insulation.

it may well be the same stuff....polyethylene plastic fibers.  great rebound, works great, but totally goes against everything that AP is about!  without a closed reuse/recycle loop, i cannot advocate for its use and will stop using it myself.  it violates an unwritten law about not mixing organic matter with petroleum products.  everytime a piece of fluff blows away down my hillside i feel a twinge of guilt knowing that fluff will wash into the local streams, then to the bay and into the sea to be eaten somewhere along the way by some hungry critter.  or that it'll just get lodged and accumulate, sitting there for the thousand some years it takes to break down into bits of complex carbohydrates that nature might be able to recycle back into the circle of life.

i dont know if its the same but in the pool supply area of homedepot they have big bags of what looks to be the same stuff. dont know how they compair but if its the same then a pool supply co might have it cheaper. ever look into blown insulation? the new stuff looks very similar and is realy cheap and comes in bale size. does this stuf rebound well after you compress it?

That's unfortunate about the recycling aspect. They seem like a good product though. I have only used their seedling mat for micro greens, but it works very well.

Wicking like a champ!  Unfortunately, there are two downsides that are deal breakers imo.  Some bits of plastic fluff will come off and sucked down a pipe at some point and you can't compost the root ball full of plastic!  You can't recycle it either.  The roots and fluff are one solid thing.

How is the STG loose fill working out for you so far? Is it worth the price?
