My previous attempt at basil wasn't overly successful. Let's try again. This set was started on paper in a plastic bag in a warm location. Sprouted in 2 days. Transplanted on day 3. This is day 4. Under lights inside.

As a side note, the roots of the sprouted seeds can become embedded in the paper.  In the past I've pulled the seedlings off the paper and sacrificed the roots that broke.  This doesn't appear to be to fatal to the plant, but I've always wondered if keeping all the roots would be a better choice.

With that in mind, for the basil in the photo above, I trimmed the paper to the size of the mini-pots and placed the sprouts, paper and all, in the pot and very lightly covered them with potting mix.  I'm assuming that the paper will disintegrate over time and the young roots won't be harmed in the potting out process.

It's all an experiment, but, so far, it looks promising.

I used damp paper towel inside a plastic bag.

Here's a description: SEED STARTING: THE BAGGIE METHOD

It worked very well for tomatoes, peppers, basil, and cucumber.

I'm currently trying cilantro/coriander but haven't seen any sprouts yet.
