Conrad,

People have done this and have shown pictures on this site. A guy in Hawaii showed really well how he linked I think four mixing tubs with connected drains and an external bell siphon to regulate all of the drainage. Having the bell siphon out of the bins does give you some extra grow space in the mixing tubs.

How would I connect a few gravel-filled flood and drain concrete mixing trays so that I fill with one input pipe and using only one bell siphon. Has anyone  tried to do this?

These type of carrots are short and chubby anyway and I would not consider this to be full grown. The tops grow so well and fast I just finally removed them from the AP bed and replanted them outside. The grow bed they were in is an eight inch depth. They are the large size concrete mixing trays. I do have one small mixing tray at a depth of six inches. I may use these large mixing trays again but am thinking more on the deeper side for future beds. These carrots were just a trial anyway. I have seen some folks having great sucess with root type vegetables. Customing tuning a bed to a specific plants needs is the fun part! If I were trying to be sucessful at root growing veggies I would go with a deep bed myself. So to some degree I would think a corrot is limited to the size of the growbed.

Is the size of carrot limited to the depth of the grow bed? I am interested in tubors... sweetpotatoes and carrots mainly, but I have heard these are dificult to grow.  Your carrot looks like a very healthy top and lots of fine roots, but the carrot itself... I heard 12 inches is needed for a good bed. Yours looks to be about 5 or 6 inches maybe? Please don't be offended by my questions. My daughter and I are attempting this for our first time. We posted a video 2 weeks ago and will be posting another in a day or two of where we are today. We have plants growing, but didn't try the carrots this year in this system. Last year we had all upside-down planters, home made. The carrots did ok but not great as we hoped. Good Luck!!!
