yes - it's definitely 8ppm (or more). I originally overdosed my system (don't ask) with powder ammonia. I think it really soaked into my hydroton. I completely replace the water 3 times, got the ammonia down to 1ppm, but then over a week it just kept creeping up-and-up. Probably leeching out of the hydroton.

I think it's starting to clear out. The green reading isn't as muddy-green as it used to be, so I think it's turning towards 4ppm. The bacteria are going, so hopefully they will have at it. The guys at 312ap said that even high ammonia can be processed as long as there is plenty of dissolved oxygen. I have plenty of aeration.

If it doesn't get to 4ppm in a week, I'll look to doing some more water changing.

Claude, I haven't calibrated my monitor in a while...is your total ammonia at 8ppm?
