I have thought about the pipes a bit, and I think I could get away with routing them under ground.  I think.  It would be a lot neater and provide easier access.   As it is, it's not too bad.

Painting the pipes is a good idea.  I should probably do that.   It's easy.  There's no reason not to.    I probably won't.  Why?  I dislike painting with a passion.

John, the beds are great looking.  i'd take those over my totes anyday!  i painted a PVC pipe of mine.  If that's what u don't like, how about painting it tan?
