My heating controller ready for use this winter. With two heaters, it should be much better than the turkey fryer I used last winter.

That sounds like a good idea.  I thought about the heaters your talking about but I have 900 gals of water to manage.  I am indoors so I don't get the fluxuation in temperature.  I may do what your talking about for my breeder tank so I can keep the temp higher on it.  Thank you for replying and for the information. Good luck on the fish !

I've been using a 300 and 400 watt submersible heaters from my local pet store. They barely do the job. I just bought a 500 watt tube heater (the kind that is actually fully submersible) and plan on buying another as soon as I can. I've seen plans for heaters made from water heater elements but it seems I can just buy a 500 watt heater cheaper than I can make one. Also, I like to run two heaters in the tank at once to provide some protection against a failure. My 300 watt heater just failed the other night (figures, the first cold night in Alabama) and my water temp. went down by a full two degrees last night. I'm hoping fish don't die before my new heater is delivered. Anyway, with the plan of two 500 watt heaters, if one should fail, the other should keep me from losing fish overnight.

What type of heaters are you using? I am thinking of a DYI in my sump using a hot water heater element.
