Hey Adam, 

Yes, I live in the middle of nowhere and shipping hygroton was very expensive.  Lava rock cheap at the local Lowe's   Next time I am using lava rock base and river pebbles on top.

is lava rock more affordable than hydroton? or is there another reason you did two different layers?
