I've placed mesh screening over my PVC pumping water into each GB. If you don't do this, if your entry plumbing is pushed into media to prevent algae growth on top of media, you will suck media down into your pump and potentially break impellers. I learned of this unfortunate consequence by ruining a $90 dollar pump.
