It's amazing what you can get done when you take the day off from work and you have an excavator at your disposal. The foundation hole is back filled and the thermal mass piping is almost done! woohoo!

Thanks for all the feedback.  I was very scientific about the entire thermal mass...I guessed.  ;-)  Basically I decided to insulate the 4' wall and bury the pipe about 1/2 way down.  I figured it would help to minimize the head leakage down and maximize the storage area.  I honestly have no idea if it will be enough mass but I figured I might as well invest the few hundred dollars to put it in while there was still a hole there!  Feel free to email me at rtorcellini (at) bigelowbrook (dot) com.

This web site does a great job explaining  Subterranean Heating and Cooling Systems (SHCS). Here's the direct link to the SHCS calculator, a Num Sum spreadsheet. I created an excel version. Let me know if you would like a copy.

How did you calculate your thermal mass / air to air geothermal system?  I am working, physically, on mine this week.

I would love to talk to you about the project we are in michigan and are building our thermal mass in a 35,000 sqft ware house.
