My 75 gallon system. I have two cucumber and one tomato plant growing out onto a trellis behind the system.

you can think of it in terms of pounds of fish per gallon of water but in a small system like mine, using batch stocking, it's easier to think of number of fish per gallon.  the nutrient level will be low when they're young but since i'm not moving them into larger tanks as they grow out you could say 1 fish per two gallons. but that puts me near 30 fish and that is clearly too much for just one grow bed.  I don't want to buy another grow light and expand my winter set-up but maybe next year I'll rig up some sort of trough system outside.

what is it supposed to be, 1/2 lb of fish for 1 gallon of water?

I have way too many fish.  it's difficult to keep the water chemistry in balance.  I learned a good lesson, just because your fish can tolerate a certain stocking density, it doesn't mean you have enough plants to extract the nutrients.  luckily I've had enough rainwater that I can change it out and water my garden plants with fish poo.
