The metals will leach into the water and poison the fish. The only metal I trust in my system is high quality stainless steel. As for the bell siphons I think they were invented to build character. I have to tweak mine too. My theory is roots and solids fill the voids in the gravel and change the way water moves in the bed.

How so ? yes its connected but there is a sump tank and a dws in between the two. so far the fish are doing great I occasionally and randomly have an issue with the bell siphon. there does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to it it will work for days then just stop. sometimes i have to fiddle with it once other times more

Hi Reese, Is this GB connected to the fish tank? If it is then the tin cans in it could cause you to have problems with your fish.
