OK it kinda worked. But needs work. The grow bed is 17' long x 2'-6" wide x 1' deep. I used my garden hose to fill it up and flush the gravel. I used a 1 1/2 inch pvc pipe for the drain. I think I need to go smaller. The garden hose did not fill it fast enough to start the siphon.I had to pull up on the bell to give it a boost and when I did it drained very fast. Like in one minute or less. How fast should it fill and how slow should it drain. hmm not sure yet.

It will allow the siphon to start with lower flow rate and drain slower

Hi Dave,

you can attach a 1/2 " or 3/4" reducer to the overflow pipe at a height that is below the bed.

Hmm. So draining fast is good? And you want to fill slow?

One system I help build had a 16' x 4' cinderbed with an air pump and took 29 minutes to fill and only 3 minutes to drain.
