The systems are called ebb and grow.  The water is pumped in and out on a timer.  They use the same hose to pump the water in as out.  I had so much nitrate that i could handle more plants so i filled the buckets with granite and put in tomato plants.  We are now building the racks to go over the tomato plants so they can grow 5 to 6 foot tall.  The buckets are 2 gal each.  We actually have a bucket in a bucket.  The outside bucket holds the water.  The inner bucket has holes in the bottom.  The water fills in from the bottom and emptys from the bottom.

I've been trying to figure out the bucket plumbing, but can't.  Can you explain it?
