the external pipe stops halfway up the bucket. the 2" pipe sits over it and acts as a media guard to keep small pieces of media from getting sucked into the airlift pump. I wanted to take clean water from the middle of the media bed, since the dirty water's getting sucked out the bottom of the fish tank.
