These freshwater mussels grow totally submerged David...

They have one perculiarly interesting aspect to their life cycle... they require a fish "host"...

Almost like a parasitic relationship... both the release of the spores by the female, and fertilisation by the male... are triggered by the movement of the fish host....

The spores actually attach under the scales of the host fish... and become fertilised when the fish swims through sperm released by the male mussel as a result of proximity movement by the fish host..

Once they reach a certain size the now juvenile mussel... detaches, without harm to the fish host... as a completely self sufficient mussel...

Nice looking yabbies Rupert.
I've seen mussels growing where freshwater is running into the ocean, here in FL. They stick up out of the dirt about 1/2 ways. Will yours be growing like that Rupert ? Can they be under water all the time ?
