The priority for this garden was to have a beautiful koi pond, i.e. clear water. This is why I decided it was necessary to have an dedicated filtration system independent from the aquaponic grow beds.

I wanted to experiment with Dr. Mark R. McMurtry's Integrated Aqua-Vegeculture System (sand beds), but decided not to commit fully without having any prior experience. I designed a compromise that only puts the fine solids on top of the sand beds while dumping the large heavy solids out into the surrounding soil garden. The client still has the option of pouring the large solids onto the sand beds.

The grow beds were designed like a wicking bed, with a drain pipe and gravel on the bottom to ensure good flow-through and allow for multiple setup options (f&d, flow-through wicking, constant flood).

Time will tell how well this system works and I'll be sure to post updates over the next couple of months!
