Ron,
I am very new to all of this, so I don't know if I truly have the experience to give you a very good answer, but the short one is yes they seem to work good!  I am in Arizona, and the summers are HOT!  However I love blackberries and I know they grow well around creeks and springs here with limited sun, so I figured why not try it!

This area that I have put them in is on the side of our house, and as you can see it's very small, so the pipe idea seemed like the best option.  From what I had read and seen most people who do the pipes just do a continuous flood in them, but I decided to do a "Fill & Drain" system, since that is how the rest of my system is setup.
Well needless to say, trying to figure out a siphon on something this small was interesting, but I finally figured out a system that would work, and after a LOT of tweaking, it has now been running awesome!  The tubes fill and drain about ever 15 mins or so, and so far the plants all look happy!

Only time will tell, as my system is still not fully cycled, but hopefully it will turn out just the way I want!!!
