Ben, Never say never.  One thing I enjoy is doing things that "they" say can't be done  If I fail, I learn. I start over and do it again different.  Roots should just travel along the 3" PVC asorbing water and growing happy. ( unless your 3" PVC is only 12" long.  lol)  Let us know how your strawberry and bell peppers do.

Bob, That looks like more roots than my little 3" pvc can handle.  I planted bell peppers and strawberries for my first crop.  But, then I saw how big bell's can actually get, so we will see how long til the pipes require moving to a new bed.

Love it! We are just coming out of winter here in Hawai`i and my tomatoes are starting to take off. I have the pears that look like snowmen!

Bob: they were  two different types of tomatoes, a yellow pear and red cherry. So many tomatoes grew, I gave them away to friends, my kids teachers, family and of course we ate them.

Yeah, tomato roots are a beast if you don't keep after them!
