I thought that the water for aquaponics was supposed to have a pH of 7. Is that a low enough pH such that copper dissolves too readily?

Yes and no Emma... A standard solar hot water heater has a bigger header tank that contains a copper heat exchanger to heat water to about 60c....

Too hot to send to the fish tank....and the copper would "ionise" in the acidic aquaponics water... and kill the fish...

It was purpose built from stainless steel... works on the same principles...

Works too well on a hot summer day... with the pump cycle I use.... so I cover it to reduce the heat buildup...

Is that a solar water heater?
