My first system. Finally seeing some bacterial growth in the bed since I moved it up from the bsmt. Ammonia level is dropping and nitrites are up. Nitrates too. PH has dropped from 8.4 to 8.0. Started seeds in the upper bed in a tray w/rock wool. I'm officially hooked.

I seek the cold basement. I am using goldfish and growing cold hardy plants.

My basement is running an average 67-68F, so it may be warm enough and it gets some south light through small window.  I am planning to add some reflective mylar space blankets as curtains to improve reflectivity.

Hi Bill, I think a combination of these 2 factors. Could not get the temp above 60-62 down there and the only light it got was from my grow/ work lights. I pretty much refuse to heat the basement of my house like that since it is 100 yrs old and does not hold heat well! I added ammonia on Oct 28th so the whole cycling process is pretty green but it has definitely accelerated since bringing it up. Average temp is 70-72.

What do you think was the issue with bacteria development in the basement?  Too dark? Too cool? Curious since I started my system in the basement, as well.
