I am looking to buy any food grade IBC totes in the Southern Maryland area.  If anyone could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.  I am willing to pick up anywhere along 301 and 5 freeways between the Potomac river and DC area.  Thanks in advance.

Luana, I've been at aquaponics now for about 1 1/2 years and I read all the info about ammonia and nitrite levels and initially did the water changes but I have found out that Tilapia are hearty fish and tolerate a lot. I've have ammonia and nitrite levels so high that all my fish should be dead and I never lost one while that was going on. I would suggest that you make adjustments as you are doing but not to fret too much over these low #s. The gunk isn't the bacteria, it's solids so they do need to be cleaned. 0 ammonia and nitrites is cool but not necessary. As a matter of fact if your Ph is 7 or lower you can run higher ammonia levels safely because the ammonia turns to ammonium at lower Ph.

Remove the solids,

Review James Rakocy's work at the U. Virgin Islands, solids removal is a necessity just for this reason. If not alleviated you can see a major system collapse.

We have our tilapia in the basement for the winter and they have been multiplying, which we love! However our nitrite levels are constantly running above .25, so we need to do frequent water changes. Our filters plug up w gunk, though, which I thought was the bacteria that is supposed to change it into nitrate. Temps about 82 - 85 degrees F. Good water flow through filters, if it slows we wash them with well water which is what we use in the tanks. Any ideas as to why we can't get the systems cycling better!

i bought 25 small yp, (i think 3", but it's been a couple years) 100% survival, quick service..

not affiliated with them in any way.. I'm still working out my next stocking plan, right now I just have tons of minnows and crayfish.  i'll probably stick with yp, and get 150 or so

Comment by Tim Kelbert on February 2, 2015 at 3:43pm

Keith Rowan- when did you order the perch and what was the survival rate? How many did you buy? Is there a required amount to purchase or as little as you like? Thanks for the referral to Sugar Creek.

Is this the same material being used by Koi growers/breeders?

Hi Zen Frog. Recently, finding suitable AP media has become problematic. (I'll try not to mention or slam any brands  by name), but they either float right out of the grow beds, or drive pH WAY down, and EC WAY up. Expanded shale is not a viable solution, not because it floats, but because of the way in which it effects pH and EC.

Sylvia and myself have been working on a solution for a good while now and have managed to come up with something good.

15 cubic feet (or 425 liters of media) would cost you $295 plus shipping. It doesn't float, it won't mess with your EC or TDS values, it's lightweight kiln fired clay aggregate, very structurally sound...and It's NOT expanded shale. If you are interested you can contact me either here on the forum, or at vlad@atriaaquagardens.com

I have an above ground pool that has been sitting for a while. Does not leak. Got it for Talapia and then had complications  with land lord. It's free for whoever wants it. But I am NOT transporting it to you or meeting you half way so don't ask. Sorry but there is a reason I am saying this!!

This is free so if you want it then Please come get it. My number is 916 595 2330. I live in Lincoln CA.
