Mike from Boston, MA.  About 15 miles West to be exact.  Currently laid off from my electrical construction job.  Just finished up my permaculture design course, applied for the master gardeners program and waiting for a reply.  I'm looking to donate my time, and possibly intern/work in this field.  Really quick learner, and have a serious passion for this type of work.  Hope to move away from the construction business and do this full time one day.  If anyone in the area is looking for help or knows anyone looking for help any information would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Internship Opportunity:

We're accepting applications for one internship beginning this spring at our current commercial/research aquaponic greenhouse.  We're in the process of building another greenhouse that we will be moving our operation to in April and May.  We will work with the accepted intern to teach aquaponic system design, management and commercial models.  The position is unpaid for greenhouse work as it is considered part of the educational aspects of the internship.  However, we typically pay interns minimum wage for help with manufacturing and other aspects of the business.  You would work alongside several academic interns/apprentices as well as other non-academic interns.  You are responsible for your room and board- most interns choose to get a part-time job in addition to the internship.  Interns that do very well and show promise may be offered paid positions at the company after the end of their internship.  Please email me at nate@brightagrotech.com if you are interested.  Tell my why you would like to intern with us, what your goals are, and attach your resume.

hello everyone!

I'm Damon Polta and i spent 9 months on the friendly aquaponics farm and 7 months managing the friendly aquaponics farm (when it was producing 400lb of sellable mixed lettuce per week).

I've got an MBA in life skills and survival and i've got a PHD in fast talking and spinning a topic, what can i say? talking is a talent that i've turned professional.

i specialized in harvesting logistics and facility management while i was on the FAP farm. although there are ways to up the production of a set space to far beyond the yield that we were hitting, they preferred to keep it old school.

when it come to aquaponics i'm looking for something to fill up the next few months. i've got something big planed for the spring, but i'm feeling the itch to get my hands on some fish and lettuce.

if you feel that you might be in need of my services please feel free to contact me at nomadatlop@msn.com. thats my personal email and all of my email is directed to my phone which is connected to my hip.

wishing you all the best from the American midwest,

Damon

Sorry forgot that everyone doesnt know Show Low, Arizona and forgot the state in it.

Comment by Ken Richardson on September 2, 2011 at 2:05pm
If anyone is interested, the Euro Fresh in the Show Low area had a opening for manager of one of the farms. It is hydroponic, not aquaponic also. I have not heard that it has been filled yet, but this is a very nice area. You could check with them to see if they have it filled. Good luck to someone out there.

In 2009 and 2010 I did internship work in Hawaii on an aquaponics farm (Olomana Gardens; contact Glenn Martinez (owner)808-237-0842 or Natalie Cash (Farm Manager)808-230-4557).  The internship included maintaining tilapia and plants (lettuce, taro, strawberries, eggplant, azolla, duckweed, basil, etc.) within the system.  In the mornings and early evenings I would feed the tilapia to satiation (when they stopped feeding i stopped applying feed and netted out any extra feed). I also cleaned filters once a week.  I helped with the exchange of water in tanks when neccessary (evaporation).  I also checked water quality at least once a week using electronic meters and Hach test kits.  I checked the water flow of the system daily during morning feeding.  I also made soil blocks (using worm castings, cinder, coconut husk) and started many seedlings for the system.  They system contained cinder beds (beds that had media) as well as float beds (just water, like hydroponics systems).  The commercial system was the system I helped to maintain while we would also build smaller systems for schools on the island as well as for demonstrations at the Hawaii island farmers market.  I also gave tours and educational talks about the systems when visitors came to the farm.  One of the goals of the farm I worked on was to build community involvement in creating healthy sustainable food practices for the island (due to large costs of importation of goods).  We lived in a community setting on the farm and had daily discussions every morning.  I was also lucky enough to get to attend a workshop on Big Island at Dragonseye aquaponic farm.  I have helped Dr. Anita Kelly at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff to construct a small indoor aquaponics system at the fish health lab in Lonoke, AR.

My undergraduate degree is in field biology.  I am currently enrolled as a graduate student at UAPB in the aquaculture and fisheries department.  My expected graduation date is not until May of 2012 (or maybe up until Aug 2012).  At that time I would like to find a job working with aquaponics systems. The courses I have taken so far (including grades) are Aquatic chemistry and analysis (A), Statistics in Research (A), Graduate Seminar (A), Water Quality Management (A), Experimental design and analysis (A), Engineering and Construction of aquaculture facilities I (B; I think my lack of interest in pond aquaculture may be why I got a B in this course due to the fact this course only focused on levee and watershed pond construction), Engineering and construction of aquaculture facilities II (A)(I gave a powerpoint presentation on aquaponics in this course as my Final presentation because the course was based on recirculating systems).  If you would like to see a transcript of courses and grades I will be happy to provide one upon request.

If anyone knows or will have any openings for jobs in aquaponics next year I would be very interested in applying.  Aquaponics is a great passion of mine and I would prefer to pursue it as a career instead of a hobby.  I was also curious if anyone knows if any institutions (such as the peace corps) would have any openings for sending someone to build these systems overseas in poverty-striken areas (that lack freshwater).

Many thanks for any information from anyone,

Jennifer

Hi Kathy.  We are curently working with Region V EPA to develop a site in Chicago.  We're not quite ready but you should stay in touch.  Also Region V EPA is doing an urban ag project in Ohio.  I don't know if aquaponics is included but it might be worth the look see.

Please feel free to log into my ChicagoNow (Tribune blog) http://www.chicagonow.com/bronzeville-urban-green/ I will be doing some things on aquaponics in Chicago.  Mayor Emanuel is pushing an initiative to get projects up and running.

I'm a recent college grad looking for a job and or graduate study program related to aquaponics! I'm currently in Ohio, but more than willing to travel! I have student loans to pay off, so sadly it will need to be a paid job. Not much, even if it's part time and there are other jobs nearby that's OK too! I have a BA in Zoo and Wildlife Biology, although I'm very well rounded and knowledgeable about building projects and several other skills. Shoot me an email me if you have or know of something! Thanks!
