Nice to meet you Loretta, yes, I'm still building my aquaponics system. I have built a system in my backyard that is aesthetically pleasing as well as functional. I have the planter dumps going into waterfalls into my pond. Unfortunately, my pond keeps on leaking and I have had a horrific time finding the issue. I am still troubleshooting it so I have not been able to properly plant and get my fish yet. Let me know if I can help. I'm learning on the fly like most after reading and getting Murray Hallam's teaching dvd's.
Winters are mild with a few below frost point nights. I built a three barrel filtration system included with the three planters. The first is a swirl filter while the other two contain media. I was thinking I will insulate and wrap the barrels with black material and maybe even add some heaters to the last two barrels. I know tilapia like warmer waters and this would also keep the plants warm as well. The system is not in a green house. Again, due to the leak I have not fully gone through a winter with the system completely up and running. Without the above measures in place, my pond which is quite deep (seven feet) still got to 50F which is too cold for tilapia.
