I , like you , live in an environment with similar power challenges ( which are daunting enough to make one stop, stare and turn and even consider running from the idea ) !!, but, I will say this, its taken some work and the systems I have built so far are very low running cost and power outage proof to a large degree ( not days and days mind you ) , then again those days are gone in india too.
I will be happy the day I finish finding a way of integrating the power supply into the systems to make them run even cheaper or for free, or better still find a way for gravity to do more for me than it is right now.Truth is, I am not going to find the answer by waiting for the best/cheapest alternative for me to dawn on someone else , besides I may find a really good one for my environment along the way myself. I find most of my progress depends on dealing with challenges that are real like " how much do I really need? what can i get? how can i use it better?. I must mention my power bill has jumped by a mere Rs 300 per month and if you see my videos I do have a fair amount of systems running 24/7 and this is at city power rates.
so, I think, if the power aspect of the process is more enticing for you, go for it. I wish you luck and hope you find a solution for which all of us will surely thank you .
