I am building an aquaponics system from the plans for a micro system from Friendly Aquaponics that I purchased a few months ago. I am looking for a pure strain Blue Tilapia source somewhere hopefully in the western US near to my location. I am not quite ready for the fish yet but will be in approx. 5 weeks. Is it realistic to expect that warm water fish could be shipped to my location in the dead of winter or should I just go fishing for some trout until the spring? Any advise would be appreciated.

    Hi Louis,

Thanks for joining the Aquaponic Gardening community! I hope you find it a fun place to explore aquaponics. There is a real blend of experienced and new aquapons in this community, so please don’t hesitate to get in there and start asking questions. Everyone is quite happy to help out new members – no question is too basic.

A great place to start is to read the How to Use This Site link on the upper right corner, “Start Here” section of the Main page.

Please add a photo of yourself and participate!

Thanks again for joining us, and I look forward to getting to know you.

Yes, you can get tilaipia in the middle of winter. You may need to pay more for the shipping because of the extra packing materials, but as long as your state allows imports of tilapia fry you should be able to find them. Is your system indoors?

I'd probably say go for trout (or other climate appropriate fish) unless your system is already set up with heat and indoors.
I'm not nearly so fond of Tilapia anymore just because of the heating issue and I'm in Central Florida (two winters of having to go to extreme measure to keep them alive in a greenhouse in Florida.) Never mind now I don't even have the greenhouse but we actually like eating the catfish better :P

    Hi Louis,

I'll be moving to Grants pass soon and was wondering how your system is working? Have you introduced any fish yet?

    Thx
