@sw Yes, my system is up and running, using an old hot tub, 400 gallon capacity. does this help?

  • SW

    Welcome new members!

@Lucy - You have an 80 fish capacity @ 400 gallons.  That doesn't mean you have to have that many for your system to run properly, that's just the max "recommended" density.  Since this is your first system it might be a good idea to start with some inexpensive feeder goldfish to get your system cycled.  That's what I did in the beginning and I still have many of those original goldfish.  They are now HUGE and look like small, fancy Koi!

I think what SW is meaning is that when your fish are adults, you should not do more than 80 fish. My first batch of fish were 50 White Nile Tilapia in a 100 gal tank. As my fish grew, I added tanks and grow beds. Now, I use aquariums to keep my eye on the little ones and their water. A 40 gal aquarium can accommodate 100 frys easily. That is my opinion

Welcome to our newest member Randy Proctor!  He has graciously offered fingerlings to those in the Jay Oklahoma area!  I will be adding a new "discussion forum" for that area!

    Here's what Randy is offering:

"Would like to help out people in a driving distance.  We are in Jay Ok.  You must come and get them.  Have a portable battery operator and 5 gallon bucket for them to travel."

    Thanks Randy!

Good day all,  As I live in Cocoa, I am a little concerned about keeping these fish alive during the 3 weeks of winter that we experience in Central Florida.  So Mr. Sam, do you heat your tanks at all, or just let Mama Nature hve her way???

  • SW

    Hi Ed,

Yes I do heat my tanks and cover them with styrofoam.  When it gets really cold I stop my pumps and siphon leaving just the aerators going.

  • Larry Reinhardt

    Hey Ed,

I left my 96 blues(I think they r blues) out all winter in an above ground pool and I only lost two. We have had worse winters but even at that I have seen them in a river and a lake just a few miles from me(NW of Apopka). I know the water temp went down to 48 so they are tougher than advertised.

SW - 3 pair of those you gave me spawned over the weekend so Ed(the Ed who I split them with) should have some fry as well.

  • SW

@Larry - That's great news!  It's wonderful to hear of the multiplying. Here in Port Orange we too had a mild winter and with heaters in my IBC tanks it wasn't hard to keep the water in the 60's and my aquariums all stayed in the upper 60's.

Anyone around central fl. have some blue males they would like to swap for some of my males or females?  I want to setup a new breeding colony and would like to introduce some new genes to the colony.

  • Larry Reinhardt

    Hey Sam,

I caught up some of the fish in my 3,000 gal FT to see if any of them had mouths full of eggs or fry, not yet the water hasn't gotten above 72 so far. Those fish are from a breeder in Dunnellon and look like your fish, the males are 9 to 12 inches. I'm going to cross your fish with them and your welcome to some males if you are interested.

  • SW

Oh thanks Larry!  I need to get your address so I can come by sometime and see your setup and grab a couple of males from you.  I will be over in your direction quite a bit over the next few weeks so maybe we can arrange a time to meet.  Shoot me an email with your contact info and I'll give you a call.

  • SW

Welcome to all new members!  Sorry a couple of you had to wait a few days to get approved.  I have been elbow deep in the "unglamorous" part of aquaponics the last few days.

I have several females brooding and will have plenty of new fry soon so anyone that wants some let me know!

    Namaste,

    Sam

I was wondering if someone that is not too far from Titusville, FL would be willing and able to provide some material from their healthy system for inoculating my new 100 gal. system?

  • Larry Reinhardt

I am flooded with tilapia fry and fingerlings - you need to pick them up in Astatula, FL. These are Blues out of the fish I got from SW.

  • Maurice Person

Just growing food for my community in Kansas CIty.  But as soon as they get big enough. I want to start breeding them for Heirloom Tilapia and Catfish.  Keep it in the Family....

  • Steve Manning

Anyone want to trade some blue tilapia for some catfish?  Orlando FL.  I want to trade around 20 fish.  They are bigger then fingerlings.  Even if its months from now when breeding comes back into play.  Keep me in mind. My blue tilapia came from Larry.

    Thanks everyone,

    Steve...

  • Ivette

Hi everyone. I will be building a three 55 gallon tank system soon. At 3-5 gallons per fish, that'$ 11 to 18 fish i need for my first system. Does anyone have this many fish they can give me in the Miami or South Florida area? I can trade 55 gallon barrels for the fish. Thank you,

    Ivette in Miami
  • Jamie

Hello . Nice to meet everyone. I am an avid square foot gardener for many years, and have recently fell in love with aquaponics. I don't think there is a video on YouTube or a website I have not visited yet. I am currently in the construction phase of my system. I am working on a CHOP 2 system. I have a 600 gallon tank, a 200 gallon sump, 2x 100gal, media beds, 4x 100 gal raft beds an I tied in 10 self watering wicking buckets. I definately have the bug. I am getting close to starting my first fishes cycle. I know with my volume of water that I should have @200 fish in my system, but think I will start with 100. any insight on whether or not I should start with 100 would be greatly appreciated. also in about 6 weeks I will be looking to stock my tank with blue Tilapia. if anyone would be willing to donate a few fingering or fry to get me started I would be much appreciative...... I will most defiantly pay it forward in return.... thank you all.... I am so looking forward to this new project. I live in the Orlando Florida area and am looking forward to meeting other aquapods in this area.
  • Keith Rowan

jamie,, you may want to reconsider your stocking density.. with only 200 gallons of media (growbeds) you should stock to grow 50lbs of fish (get 50 fingerlings to grow out to 1lb each)

  • Larry Reinhardt

Jamie I have 40 + fingerlings you can have to get you started. I believe that will be enough for your system for now.

  • Jamie

Thank you so much. My system should be ready real soon. Then I will meet up with you. Thank you so much. What town do you live in
  • Jamie

Keith Rowan. Should I not have more to equate for the 400 gallons of floating raft beds and 50 gallons of wicking baskets?..
  • Jamie

Or would you suggest turning one of the raft beds into a media bed
  • Keith Rowan

the raft bed only provides the surface area of the "box" and the bottom of the rafts.. media beds, provide much more surface area.. i wouldn't really consider the wicking beds as filtration unless they were "flow through"

to grow that many fish, i would turn the raft into a media bed..

and probably add at least some mechanical filtraion - tilapia are pretty sloppy fish

  • Jamie

I have added a 5 gallon swirl filter. thanks for the advice.
  • Brad Moreau

Hello all. I'm new to aquaponics and the forums here. I'm not new to the aquarium hobby, or gardening, but am excited about putting the 2 together. I have watched loads of YouTube vids and read countless hours of info off the net. I have recently put together a small starter system that has been cycled for a little over 2 weeks now, and is ready to add more fish. If anyone in the Jacksonville/North East region has too many tilapia and need to get rid of some let me know...

  • Dagmarvelous

I'm in San Clemente, CA, and I have a momma that won't stop breeding!  (Not such a bad problem, eh?!)  Reach out to me to see if I have any fingerlings on hand if anyone needs some... pick up only.

  • Derrick Kerr

If anyone here is in Maryland, I just created a group Maryland Aquaponics for open discussion about the difficulties specific to our area. Please join me and lets talk aquaponics.

I'm looking for others in the San Antonio, TX area to share with. I don't have any babies yet, but last year I had a ton to share. The ones I have now are mostly red colored Mozambique and are all 2nd generation from my system.

  • Sly

I recently built an ibc tote system and now looks ing to change my golden fish to tilapia and catfish. Does anyone in the area have tilapia of catfish available near San Jose, CA? I've been lurking on this website and love the information you guys are giving. I am now a member!
