Thank you Leisa, Randy, and Alex for all the information you shared with Kim and I yesterday. After going home we did the fizz test and found out our rock is not the right kind. So we emptied 4 of the growbeds and Kim is going to Keller material to get different rock. She is taking Vinigar with her. So when I get off work we will be cleaning and putting the new rock in the growbeds. Once we get the 4 done we will empty and fill the other 4. Then we are going to work on a pipe system of some kind. Thanks again.

So we have our system up and running now. We have 4 barrels cut in half to make 8 grow beds. We have a 110 gallon sump tank buried in the ground that the grow beds drain into. In that we put 4 crawdads (crayfish) to help keep it clean. The water is pumped from their up into a IBC tote fish tank. We pumped water out of our goldfish pond to the IBC tote to make sure we had good water to start with. We caught about 6 goldfish of different sizes to put in the fish tank until we get some Blue gill.

So far we have had the fish tank overflow because the drain to the growbeds clogged up. Then we had the sump tank overflow because 3 of the beds all drained at the same time. My wife spends a lot of time tweaking and adjusting the flow and says we will get it all ironed out soon.

heating the water - running the water through a shallow black trey or grow bed will heat the water up. putting plastic over it should help as well.

From what I've been told, but haven't researched, is that the meds for Ich may contain heavy metals (esp. copper) which allegedly might get back to us via the plants, or fish, or both - sorry I just don't know the specific effects of the meds. We know, of course, that they are used in plain ol' aquarium setups all the time.

Thanks David.  However, I do not have a heated system.  What are the adverse affects of medication on the plants?  I only have a couple of mature plants remaining from the fall/winter.  Mostly seedlings plants right now.

Thanks,

J

Start raising your water temperature. I've cured it tanks years ago by raising to 85 degrees without meds (you would want to think hard before adding Ich meds to your AP system because of your edible plants). I haven't tried using salt but there is an article at http://www.aqadvisor.com/articles/TreatingIchHighTemp.php you might want to look at.  A local fish seller mentioned to me that catfish have a high Ich rate in this area for some reason (something like 45-48%, I believe) in AP systems he knew of.

Hey guys and gals,

I put some small (4-6") farm raised Channel catfish in my system on 3/15.  They now have Ich.  Any suggestions on treatment for Ich for catfish?  300 gal IBC.  25 fingerling catfish, 50 feeder goldfish.

I'm not sure what it is. Randy ordered it from Tractor Supply. We are planning to use solexx when we recover it. He just took the sides off recently.
