i started pretty small, been at it over 3 years now..i still  have 4 or 5 bluegill from my first stocking (besides the minnows and crayfish i started cycling with).. i've had red wiggler worms in my growbeds from the beginning, and i'm sure they help

after you nitrites drop to zero is when you're pretty much cycled... you can make sure you're cycled by adding ammonia to 1 or so, and you show 0 ammonia and 0 nitrites the next day..

i've still got probably 90 fish left to harvest!  lots of work to do now that it's getting cold

I was glad to see that an Ohio group existed.  I am brand new to aquaponics, inspired after running a small hydroponics system in my basement last winter.

I set up a very small system to experiment with first.  A 10 gallon fish tank and hydroton grow bed with external loop siphon and continuous flood and drain system (it cycles about every 3-5 minutes).  I'm at week 3 fish-less cycling and, although numbers have been hard to interpret at times, the ammonia has now dropped daily, to zero today, and nitrates are up a bit with no nitrites.  I have small plants in the grow bed, so I am hoping these numbers mean that the full cycle is occurring.  The next few days may help confirm it.  I added "worm compost tea" at the beginning, hoping that it would contain some good bacteria as a "jump-start", and I also added some small rocks from a nearby fish-containing lake for the same purpose.

Anyway, I am in Canton, but looking to see if some AP-er is near me that I could visit and get help from.  Anyone nearby?

Harvesting 30 fish, Keith, seems way off in the distance for me, but very impressive.

what's new with the ohio ap'ers out there?

i've harvested 30 fish in the last several weeks, 28 tilapia and 2 yellow perch, getting ready to button up the unheated basement for the winter, i'll be cleaning out a couple gb's and replanting

I'm building a 6x11 grow room in my garage made with 1/2 rigid insulation with a heat barrier on the inside. My garage is already insulated but no heat so I hope that by building a smaller room inside will help control my temperature.I plan on using a 300 gallon Rubbermaid stock tank for my fish with 3 fifty gallon grow beds and possibly expanding to some zipgrows and some kind of environmental controls. This is just my wish list so far still trying to grab as much information as I can before I begin. Also thinking about using yellow perch for my fish. Do you have a system running yet and if so any success?

Hi Jeff!  We are in the process of building our greenhouse so I am not a complete expert here in Ohio.  Plus, a lot of it depends on many different factors such as where your system is?  Greenhouse, garage, basement or such.  There are a lot of different options and suppliers that I can forward you too if you wish?  Your options would include inline heaters, submerged heaters and possible others.  How big is your system?

New to aquaponics and was wondering how systems did in Ohio throughout the seasons and any tips about heating.
