Motives for aquaponics?

Just wondering what inspires people to grow using aquaponics. How big is your system and what are your future goals with aquaponics.

Can't add compost!

Phillips Exeter Acedemy. He just spoke about his businesses and took questions at the end. He doen't dig if you can believe that!! He lays down a thick layer of wood chips, then apply a generous amount of his composted organic material. So no weeds and super rich soil. However he did mention how the USDA is trying to regulate greenhouse growing saying you can grow but you need to use whatever existing soil is there polluted or not. Basically saying you can add compost!! Together we as growers need to unite and keep big Ag and Big governement out of our natural and healthy food production!!

I like the idea of hardy fish.  Where did you see Will Allen speak, Jonathan?

I just saw Will Allen speak tonight and he said he has great results with Lake Perch now that any native species are to poluted in the great lakes to consume. His actual words were "If I had one million lake perch today I would have a million sold tomorrow". Just fish for thought.

Thanks K Schreiber and Joshua! After doing a little research I think i'm going to try Yellow Perch. I'd like to avoid having to heat the water so they seem like a tasty option for that. I've yet to check out the rules for importing fish - hopefully I don't run into too many issues.

There is an aquaculturist in the Sunapee, NH area who has tilapia and has offered to sell fingerlings.  Unfortunately, I can't remember his name, but how many aquaculturists can there be in NH?  You might be able to find him through NOFA.  I'm pretty sure he's a member.

Here is a list of fish hatcheries in the area: http://www.ct.gov/dep/lib/dep/fishing/general_information/hatcheryl...

I dont know what MA law is like for importing fish. For a list of MA only locations try http://extension.umass.edu/aquaculture/finfish-farms

Hi all,

I've been doing aquaponics for a few years with goldfish. I'd love to move to some edible fish like Tilapia or perch. Does anyone know where I can purchase fingerlings in the New England area? Thanks,

Patrick

I am persuing food production with aquaponics as a main career. Until then I will be a cavemen working with lobsters.

Food security is my main motivation, but I am also concerned with potential fish scarcity as fisheries are not doing well and I LOVE to eat fish!

I will be curious to hear more about your CSA as it develops.  Sounds like a great way to get year round food.
