Motives for aquaponics?

Just wondering what inspires people to grow using aquaponics. How big is your system and what are your future goals with aquaponics.

Yes, the aquaponics is for the CSA. Someone has partnered up with me to handle business things where as I am the fish and tank guy with a dream to help people and make a difference in community. I have some thoughts to grow with greenhouse all year with aquaponics. Micro climates! Look up Eliot Coleman and add aquaponics. That's a start to what I am going towards. Now add aquarium hobby, pond hobby, including fish and plant raising for both hobbies, fresh market, equipment sales and installation, AP education(later on down the road, I am still a beginner). A multi faced and purposed green production center. I was raised a tradional over eating American. This motivates me towards AP and a healthier living both in home and around the community.

I'm glad you brought that up K Schreiber. I have worked in lobster distribution for over seven years. Power outages for Lobster companies are a serious threat. Alot of companies use back up propane generators. When I get to a commerical production level I will most likely use the same method. I do want to eventually be able to generate my own power with green energies.  Now back to the question. What will we do? We need to get a small gas powered generator. I didn't think of this and I don't know why?  I have been keeping aquarium fish for three years and outages have been short for me. Now harm to the fish and they are tropical kept at 75 degrees. I guess, if I was out of power and no generator I would just periodically keep dumping tank water through the beds. I am using gold fish so they should be fine throughout a power outage. Where I am we have only ever been out of power for eight hours.

Thank you for asking this early as it should be part of any new growers plan. Good one K!!

Hi Jonathan,

Great to hear from another NE aquapons!

Just curious, how do you plan to deal with the power going out?  We New Englanders are famous for losing power and it seems to be a growing trend.  Is your aquaponics system part of your CSA?
