Hi Pete agreed $5 each to restock is not going to work. I have some young fingerlings but not enough to sell at this point, check kijjiji I have seen them there before. Keep in mind you have to heat the tank for tilapia, they stop eating around 70F and need it warmer to breed well.

Happy New Years, eh?

I'm new to aquaponics (and to gardening or fish farming at all, for that matter).  I put together a small aquaponics farm over the Christmas holidays as a project with one of my boys. We used a few Rubbermaid tubs, a heavy duty shelf unit, some pvc for the overall structure.  I used a large bin with about 100 L water for the fish tank, about 80 L water in another large bin for the sump tank and 3 of the smaller Rubbermaid tubs (~30 L) filled with expanded clay for the grow beds. I hung two 48" T8 fluorescent lamps which each hold 2 tubes (4 tubes total). 

I've stocked it with about 30 goldfish  to start (~40 cents each) and sprinkled seeds directly into the grow beds. One bed is cucumber, one bed is kale, romaine and spinach and the last is basil and cilantro.  All three beds took off very quickly and the germination rate was so high that I am having to do my second round of thinning out already. 

Ammonia has dropped to zero, pH is holding constant around 6.5 since adding crushed coral, but nitrates and nitrites are both very high.  I'm guessing the second stage bacteria hasn't spread yet.

I'm now reading up on Tilapia and the feasibility of breeding (if that's the fish word) at home. I'm having difficulty finding anywhere that supplies them and to continually restock with shipped $5 each fingerlings doesn't sound feasible.

Anyhow, we are having fun with it and look forward to sharing ideas.

Good for you, Dave G. Do they offer workshops on aquaponics in Guelph often? Do they have a large ap system? is it open to the public? what kind of fish do they have? What plants do they grow? Many questions - AP is still very new to me, I am learning. Monika

Hi, anyone know of a french speaking in quebec doing aquaponics? We are going to raise trouts since we are located on a ancient aquaculture site...lot of fresh spring cold water....I do well in english but not my handy partner, the fishing guy. I am also looking to find a man from Ontario , Roger Frampton doing aquaponics ( on Viméo documentary) .Thanks for your help. Diane
