Comment by Dave & Yvonne Story on November 28, 2011 at 12:43pm: the University of Arizona did some R&D on grow media. It is lighter, larger and more porous than the hydroton. I am having a big batch made. the hydroton costs a lot and it gets into my plumbing. are you going to raft your plants or put them into grow media?

P.S. I'm new to aquaponics and still building my first IBC tote system. I haven't added a medium yet, so any insight would be appreciated.

I started about 6 mos ago with 50 pure white niles (ha ha), they were smaller than a dime and all white at the time, I put them all in a 100 gallon rubbermaid tank and a 50 gallon on top with hydroton and an experiment of plants. after 4 mos I seperated my 7 gray fish into another 100 gal tank with a 100 gallon tank on top experimenting with growing trees. a month later I sexed my fish to find 14 females,, I have added a 300 gallon rubbermaid in a greenhouse..

13 females with 2 males in a 100 gallon tank. I have 4 tanks with fish
