Jim,

I would love to find a thicker fiberglass or plastic sheet. For now my plan is to secure the frame underneath the FRP to use it for the support. If I could find a real stable piece of material, it would make the frame unnecessary altogether due to the recessed area around the edge of my tank.  It would solve the tight seal situation as well.

Man! Just writing me has got me burning to find a thick enough piece 4 foot by 2 foot. Does anyone have any ideas?

Try vermiculite for a seed starter. Learned it from Square Foot Gardening. Works well for me.

The pumice is difficult to clean, but this is what I'm doing with it and why I like it.

@Larry in CG....'no donut for you'....haha, cracked me up!!!  If you have floating oil in any of your tanks, I had a thought (maybe not a 'great' one)....I know that in a swimming pool it's good to float a tennis ball in the pool to gather up oils from swimmers....I know it works, but wonder if tennis balls are 'safe', as they might leach off chemicals, I know they have a chemical 'smell' to them, especially when they are new.

@Sheri, enjoyed the class last night, was good to see you and Bob, and also great to see Dr. Brooks!

@Bob, good point about the bubblers. You could use misters as well.

@Kent, great idea! If you added a separate biofilter you could minimize the ammonia spikes, I would think.

@Larry

Before I go on any further: I love the idea!

Can't you put an access hole/hatch in the raft so that you can reach the overflow tube to adjust the water height at will?

I've found that using an adapter on the top of the standpipe is a very easy way to adjust the water height.   Have a selection of heights and pop them on or off as required.
