@ Matt
I'm sure Sheri has some fish for you, but if that doesn't happen, Dennis at Gardenpool.org always has fish, you can contact him on his website.
Be VERY, VERY careful about what you buy from Craigslist.
My first batch of fish I sourced from Craigslist and the water conditions of the 'supplier' were atrocious.
I was in a mad rush to get my fish and so bought them anyway, and I regretted it from day one.
That batch of fish all died several months later. I don't know if it was their initial living conditions or whether I did something wrong, which is also a possibility, but there is a lingering doubt about the initial health of the fish.
If you DO go to a Craigslist supplier, be prepared to walk away if you don't like what you see. I wasn't, and I should have.
Hi all, I'm cycled and looking to add some Tilapia, I tried messaging Sheri Schmeckpeper, but haven't heard back yet, I wanted to try and get my fish from the community here on this site to get my Tilapia, since everyone is so helpful and also want to help out our local AZ Economy. I have seen 3 different adds on Craigslist for Tilapia fingerlings with people here locally (they could be members here, but I don't know). Anyway If anyone in our group is selling Tilapia let me know and I'd like to purchase them from you first. Otherwise I'll probably go through Craigslist, I'd like to get the fist tomorrow if possible. Thanks everyone!
A related term is "RECIRCULATING AQUAPONICS SYSTEMS (RAqS)"
See abstract below:

Greetings my friends. Back from the aquaculture conference in Nashville. Excellent though very academic in nature. The aquaponics section was particularly good. Here is a new term to consider, RASponics. It is a redefinition of aquaponics based on the rules and concepts of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) and aquaculture engineering. The Holy Grail of aquaculture as always been to find a way to bring it into urban areas. However the cost of recirculating the water to filter and clean it up was normally cost prohibitive. The concept of using plants as a huge biological filter bed is old. When Dr. Rakocy opened the door to edible plants he solved the basic problem by making the filter bed a profit center. It took the scientific community a while to catch up to him but they finally have. Here is one of the first abstracts on the concept:

Don't know if the name will last but things are about to get interesting.
Luckily I'm fish-less cycling when this occurred. The water temp dropped from the mid 70's to under 60, but after this I cranked up all three of my tank heaters and the water is back up to 75 now. I also put the cover back on the fish tank (it's basically just wood but I didn't want it to warp during the rain so I took the cover off) I've noticed that having a cover helps keep the heat in the tank and also helps algae from forming. Oh, and I just checked my plants they all survived fine. I am going to build a PVC top for the grow bed though call it a mini greenhouse, that way it will keep the rain and the birds out.
Hey I'm going to add fish this weekend, thinking about 10 gold fish looking at my system do you think that is the right amount? I'll want to get Tilapia eventually, but I'll wait to ask questions when that time comes. Thanks -M
Water temperature in my fish tank was 55F last night, down from 65F earlier in the week.
The tilapia are doing just fine. 55F? Pfffftttt!!! They survived 45F in the January cold snap. Admittedly, I expected to lose a few, but they all made it.
Ouch! Did you loose any, completely? I had to put my tilapia in a fish tank indoors for the weekend. I was about to introduce them to my tank when I saw the weather forecast. My water is freezing now! I'm glad I decided to wait. :)
