Just for giggles I was looking at Ebay for fish food possibilities and discovered someone that specializes in koi food. Koi is also a omnivorous fish so I called them and they sell large quantities to California Aquaponics people for very cheap prices.

Holly..

thanks! the vid was easier to put together than I thought it would be.

Chris..

Video - came across that little ditty when surfing Vimeo.com, lots of good creative types on there. Should've titled the vid 'Darth Coop' ;)

Vertical beds - you know looking at that pic, putting those together includes some large diameter PVC and some fittings, not that expensive at all. The trick would be to heat the PVC so that you can shape it into those spirals. My guess was some sort of drum was used to keep the uniformity.

Dave..

I used Windows Movie Maker.. comes free with Windows OS, otherwise you can download it for free from Microsoft. Didn't know how to use it, but its pretty straight forward stuff. 2 seconds per shot, fade in between and a music track. Then just uploaded the video file to YouTube.. ezbreezy.

Wow, really nice vertical spirals, easy access to veggies, a delight to the eyes, way to go Disney (and your infinite supply of funds...)!  This picture is making me want to go back to my original geodesic dome idea for aquaponics with similar growing channels (rain gutters) spirally around the walls from top to bottom, a dome gives the best light and a round pond can be installed below floor level with a walking platform over most of the pond surface....hmmm, if I'm going to have 4 or 5 different systems....which one do I begin first?  ;-)  Might be wise to just expand the shelfponics from 2 shelves to 4 and plant some basil...  Thinking I'll work on the chicken 'paddock' today instead (smiles).

Was reading up on how Epcot Center at Disney has got a hydroponic facility.. granted not AP, but of course being Disney they always find ways to 'one up' a conventionally based system.

Got a kick out of their vertical farms..

John, this is what I read,

"Although Azolla can absorb nitrates from the water, it can also absorb ammonia secreted by Anabaenawithin the leaf cavities. "

I was also thinking that if it does produce more ammonia than absorb it could be used as an alternative cycling starter. What'd ya think? sort of like 2-in-1 use?

cycling, fish food and then maybe if used in little quantity ammonia absorbent.

That's an experiment I will be interested in doing?

or maybe get my kids to do it for their school project.

I use a 1X1.2" for inner tube and a 4" outer tube. Home depot sells shorter size for those so you don't have to buy the whole pipe. the outside tube should at least be double the size of the inner one. With the size of my outer tube I can insert my hand inside... which you have to think abt things like that for future maintenance.

From what I just read about Azolla it is a nitrogen-fixing plant.

This means it takes nitrogen from the air and converts it to ammonia.  This would add to the ammonia levels in the water and would necessitate/enable larger grow beds/filters to convert the ammonia to nitrates.

Although it looks like an interesting plant, I'd rather grow more fish if I my system could accommodate more ammonia.

What size siphon are people using?

I've got a 6'x4' grow bed.   I've read a lot about siphons and have actually built a test model out of a soda bottle just for fun, but now it's time to get serious.

Suggestions, hints and recommendations would all be appreciated.
