This last one is also interesting in the fact that they raise Jatropa plants which are somewhat aquaponically raised. These plants make a high grade of bio diesel. In fact they claim to get 830+ gallons of biofuel per acre of land.

I purchased my tillapia fingerlings from edgar sanchez at unlocksmith @tilapiafarmingathome.com
he sells breders and mixed sex fingerlings, nice guy his website is tilapia farming at home. He also offers a 75% discont on breeders if you are the first person to find out the rules for bring his type of tilapia into your state
I also purchased Blue Tilapia fingerlings from Rex his email is rrains@hotmail .com anouther nice guy usually has a ad on ebay.
In either case they were shipped via mail over several states I only lost one baby
I have breeders in the basment hopefully I will be having some for slae in the next couple of months pure strian blue and alsoT. hornorum X mossambica cross. This cross acording to what I have read shoud produce 98% male. This would be a a on a small scale.
Before you get any fish make sure you can have them where you live.
The U.S may be the home of the free but no when it comes to keeping tilapia.

Many people catch blue tilapia in ponds and canals as far as a free source. If you would like to buy them, only place I know of without an aquaculture permit here is Morning Star Fishermen.
They can sell Blue Tilapia but they don't ship so you have to go visit, bring an ice chest or other tank and a bubbler for the drive. They were very nice and showed me how to check gender of the fish (once they are big enough.) I have never been to one of their classes or workshops though.

You can get way with a 40 gal but a 55 gal would be better. Actually the larger you can go the better. I wouldnt go lower than a 40 and only put 1 male with 3 females in the tank. It also depends on the size of your breeders. Smaller tank less space for breeding. I have a 55 gal with about 7 breeders in it. The breeders are about a 1year and 1/2 old.

Robert, just add more growbed, flood and drain. I've got several hundred 2" fingerlings in a 26 gallon tank (well, luckily I sold 200 yesterday, so much better now). Anyway, that's the best "better filter" you're going to find. Also, add more air to the tank. My weakest link was not ammonia, it's air. With one airstone, the tilapia were all shoulder to shoulder sucking surface water to stay alive. Adding several more stones was an easy fix.
And for the record, your fingerlings will survive 61 no prob, just give them some float time in a bag, and add scoops of new tank water into bag to help acclimate to different pH and chemistry.

Need Help soon
My NEXX filter just cant keep up with 24 2 month old tilapia, and now the filter seals failed. Can someone recommend a real good filter? FT temp is only 61 degrees and My fish have been indoors at 73 degrees and I suspect the shock would be the end of them. my aquarium is properly cycled and I have been replacing water, I rigged a 2.5 gallon hydroton filter but I need a good filter.

go to the purina website http://www.purinamills.com/ put in your zip and click "find a dealer" and give them a call.. i found a store 5 minutes from my house that would order 50lb bags of aquamax, and i did not pay shipping, just pick it up at the store.. i think it was around 36 or 38 bucks for 50lbs

Black widows are venomous, not poisonous. Meaning they can inject venom with dire consequences, but you (and fish) can eat then with delight, so long as you don't get injected while m doing so. IMO, don't worry about it, there are more important things to sweat.

This may be a silly question;( I'm finishing up my tank almost ready for fish but I see black widows might be a problem;( what if my fish eat them? And any suggestions on keeping them away?( being that this tank is on my back porch.)
