South African Aquaponic equipment sources

With a growing number of South African members, I thought that it may be a good idea to start a page dedicated to finding equipment and consumables for aquaponic systems and to share the information with others in the group.

Derick - over here on the forum we have a lot of potential fish ideas.  I have used everything from guppies to tilapia.  If you want food fish, I think Cape Town will give you trout and tilapia.  Trout may need some careful placement for summer water temp.  Not sure how many hatcheries around you can still supply fingerlings.

Tilapia could be a bit harder to find but I will go onto the website of the Aquaculture Institute of South Africa (www.ai-sa.org.za) and see if they have info on tilapia farmers nearby.  Your other food fish option is sharptooth catfish.  If you are interested, I'll suggest the same route as above.  You can also contact your local environmental management agency to determine if there are any regulations pertaining to the buying and transporting of fish that I am not aware of.

You have a resource at the University of Stellenbosch Aquaculture Institute to tap into as well.

Greetings fellow SA  members. Great idea to form a group. Wow when you Google the topic it is amazing what is going on in aquaponic world.

At the moment using fancy goldfish to keep a few containers of red salad bowl lettuce and Chinese cabbage going. Not wanting to go to big at this stage. Will start expanding when we get back from the UK visiting our grandchildren in September. Need info on fish types we have access to? Any takers?

Drew - I'm not talking about mesh reservoirs at all.  The product is called Gundle Hydroliner and is supplied by Gundle plastics here in Port Elizabeth.  It is a long sheet of think plastic that is folded over wire strung between wooden stays.  I have always thought that improving the design would be to lift it a bit higher off the ground, increase the number of wooden stays and place steel mesh underneath the liner.  It can come in custom lengths, but if Iremember correctly, their standard length makes a 1.2 m wide trench.

Kobus, Thanks for your suggestion. Those tanks are available here but I don't like round tanks as they are difficult to reach plants. At present I am using round 5000 litre plastic tanks cut long ways to give you two more or less square tanks of about 2m x 2m. Ideally they should be narrower and longer for easy access to plants. If Francois reads this I would be grateful for info on sourcing liner material.

Drew - those liners from Francois is a very nice way to go - the other possibility, if you are looking for larger, self supporting structures, is to look at pond or irrigation liners supported by a framework of timber and wire mesh.  It costs more, but will support much larger structures.  I can pass on some details about Eastern Cape companies that I have looked at in this regard.

Great idea. Here in Maun Botswana, things are very difficult to find. Anyone know where to source plastic growbeds for a start?

I thought it would help. Perhaps in larger centres getting stuff is easy but in Uitenhage there is no supplier for even the most rudimentary stuff.  I thought that this could be a common theme elsewhere. Perhaps people can start a "wish list" comment for something they are looking for and others can respond if they know where to get it.
