IBC totes in Oregon, check out
http://www.containerexchanger.com/product/subcategory:product/IBC_T...

When I was driving truck I thought the folding pallets used with a liner would be just the thing. I also saw pallet sized insulated containers that fishermen use that would be great, but much higher in initial cost.
Just trying to think outside the box.

Rick - how is the power co-generation coming along? I have often thought of using a string of wire, dissimilar metal, junctions laid against a hot source to generate electricity directly.  A combination of series/parallel circuits to get the voltage/amperage needed.  And I also want to lay a grid of black poly tubing in the roof area, at least over the fish tank (shade), to re-absorb the rising heat as well as the solar heat.

Happy New Year!

I have been working on my new greenhouse.  26'w x 24'long.  It is coming along.  We roll the trusses tomorrow.  We will have to begin building the heating system soon, but still narrowing down the design options there.  Hope all is well and look forward to hearing from you.

Hi guys,

Been working away on this system.  Green house is getting closer to completion too.  We have decided on a steam engine for power generation.  The stirling engine just doesnt have quite the effeciency we need.  Although, Stirling technologies has made a deal in China to produce their engine, so something should be on the market in a year or two.

We are currently working on the pellet fired boiler, that is probably the major hurdle, it poses the greatest risks.  But I think we have a good idea what we need so it shouldnt take too much more R&D.  I will keep you posted.

That sounds amazing rick! nice job, keep us posted.

I wanted to ask you, where did you end up sourcing your totes from? I need similar, but smaller (doing in apt farming here, LOL) food grade totes that are around 1 foot high by 18 inches deep. If you have ideasm that would be great!

Hi guys,
I have been working on a heating system that will also generate the electricity to run all the operations of the greenhouse. I have been working with a friend that is a mechanical engineer and it looks very promising.

The question that started it was: Why cant we use the fuel to generate electricity and use the resulting "waste" heat to heat the greenhouse? My reasoning was we use gas to run our car, i generates electricity and moves the vehicle as well as heats it.

So, we are working on a pellet stove that will heat the water and ambient air as well as either drive a "Stirling" engine (this is an external combustion engine) or heat a boiler for a steam engine that will generate electricity that will be used to charge a battery bank that will be attached to an inverter that will give me AC electricity for my pumps and other misc.

I will keep you posted as it gets closer to operational.

I have been looking for sources of IBC totes (275 gallon sguare containers used for food grade liquids,) but most sources are several states away. I think I am going to visit some local industrial areas and see what I can find. I know a good source for bulkhead fittings and other misc. plumbing supplies is McLendons Hardware. Barrels are available just about everywhere.

Sounds good to me, especially once I get the big tank running, I'm finding I have questions abut what kind of parts to get and where

I was hoping to discuss local subjects of aquaponics. Heating, cooling, availability of fish, and other supplies, marketing possibilities, and etc.
