As anyone ever used a siphon guard like this one? or made one like it? And how did you do it? Any pro's or cons to using one like this?

How and for what purpose could you use perlite or vermiculite? Since these growing mediums are cheaper than hydroton and take the guess work out of buying gravel (bring some vinegar and baking soda) . Also since many people on this forum are former hydroponic growers (just harvested some lettuce today) they probably have extra perlite--I certainly do. So, to boil down my question see my first sentence. what is the pale red coating on hydroton?tag:aquaponicgardening.ning.com,2011-05-12:4778851:Topic:1100232011-05-12T02:27:54.390ZJRComitohttps://aquaponicgardening.ning.com/profile/john892

Does anyone know what the pale red coating on hydroton is made from and if it's harmful in any way?

I rinsed my hydroton and got most of it off before adding to the media bed, but there's still some hanging around and on my fish tank bottom and walls.

Has anyone every looked in to using Axis as a grow media? If so let me know.

I am tinkering with the Forum's system scaling tool (developed by Dr Lennard and reworked for this site together with Sylvia) and started wondering about the depth for media beds used as mineralization sites. As the tool states, people typically use 300 mm (around 12 inch) beds, but that these can be deeper. The issue with depth is anoxia risk, but if you flood-and drain, how big is that risk in a deeper bed? If you convert the scaling tools' output for mineralization bed minimum…

As the tool states, people typically use 300 mm (around 12 inch) beds, but that these can be deeper. The issue with depth is anoxia risk, but if you flood-and drain, how big is that risk in a deeper bed? If you convert the scaling tools' output for mineralization bed minimum requirements to a media volume, you will see that using 40 or 45 mm deep beds are far less restrictive in terms of ystem footprint. I would like to know if people using these deep media beds have any comments on anoxia risk.

With our standard fish food now being 41% protein, it will require me re-thinking the depth of media beds to avoid having a huge expanse of it for a family-sized system.
Grow Bedstag:aquaponicgardening.ning.com,2010-12-12:4778851:Topic:283082010-12-12T19:44:23.000ZJRComitohttps://aquaponicgardening.ning.com/profile/john892

I'm a big fan of Hydroton, although I know it is crazy expensive...but you will have it forever. Lightweight and easy on my hands. Even looks nice. Ok, I know I'm sounding like a girl here.

What do you use and why? And if you use gravel, what size and tell us about your source.
