Where to Get Stuff on Maui

Just starting out, the biggest problem was finding out where to buy the parts needed to construct an aquaponics system on Maui.  Of course, ordering online is always an option, but the shipping cost…Continue

I was envisioning barrels of soap, but you won't know what was in them until you ask.

Thanks Rebecca.  But the barrels are suppose to be food grade.  Not ones that have previously had toxic chemicals in them.

Can't confirm this, or it's applicability to Maui, but I've read car wash places get their supplies in 55 gallon barrels. It might be worth stopping by and asking them.

Maui Aquaponics is the largest commercial operation on Maui that I know of.  Contact Ed Cichon.  Maui Economic Opportunity's Ke Kahua Hanai project has an off-grid aquaponics system run by Kassie Sarol-Silva, who is a part of this group, but you may need to qualify.  Kassie?

Glenn Martinez built a system in Waihee that I helped on and it is available for volunteers or education through Lokelani Ohana. I am building one on my own and basically learning. I know of a few, but would like to visit any that I can.

I was just wondering if there are any large aquaponics set ups on Maui looking for volunteers.  I did an internship at Olomana Gardens on Oahu and have taken graduate level coursework (almost have my masters) in aquaculture and fisheries.  I was wanting to get some more hands on experience with aquaponics to add to my resume.  If you have the time to teach me I will give you free labor.  Weekends would be the best time for me due to work schedule.  Mahalos for anyone with any information.  Also I would like to set up my own small system soon.  Does anyone have connections to getting free food containers (Barrels, etc) or other cheap supplies for setting up a system.  Is there anyone who would allow me to use their powertools in exchange for labor to cut PVC pieces, etc. in order to build my own little system?

I posted a note for Tracy Stice in the "Where to Get Stuff on Maui" discussion.  He has a 300 gallon fish tank with cover for sale.

Some of you may not realize that it was Tracy who brought the original white tilapia to Maui from the Big Island many years ago. Here are some pictures of my first harvest of my white tilapia last week.  They have been mixed with a darker breed by now so there is some variation.  But still good.

Hi All  --

I was wondering if any events are planned around February 18th?  I will be on a visit to spend time with my daughter in Lahaina area.
