Where to Get Stuff on Maui

Started by Larry Yonashiro. Last reply by gruvymann Dec 18, 2013. 22 Replies

Just starting out, the biggest problem was finding out where to buy the parts needed to construct an aquaponics system on Maui.  Of course, ordering online is always an option, but the shipping cost…Continue

Howerton has mentioned to me that there is a way to get chinese catfish, not sure if the source is on Maui or not but if someone would know it would be him.

Welcome, Al P.  I'll go in too.  So that makes 2 of us so far.  Bob says he needs 8-10 participants.  So I guess we need 6 more at least.

Robert, I'll ask Bob Howerton if he knows of a catfish source on Maui.  I would be interested to know if there is a market for catfish on Maui.  Bob claims that catfish go for a high price, so we'll see.  The Filipinos will take all the tilapia I can sell.  Sold about 300 lbs within the last 2 months at $3 / lb.  Got to keep the price low for the people because we're all having a hard time.  My fish food is only costing $60-$80 per month from Dels, so that covers my feed costs plus a bit more.  I can't supply any more at this time because I'm growing out my tilapia.  Does anyone else have the white niloticus that they want to sell?  If so, let me know and I can put you in touch with my Filipino "agent."  If we can start this type of "coop" I think we can all work together to fill the need on Maui for fish and vegetables.  There's no competition here.  The demand is higher than the supply.

I would like to know a source for catfish too. Paid top dollar, I think for channel catfish from the pet shop just to see how they do. So far 3 are doing ok with my Tilapia in a small 35 gallon tank.

Anyone have any connections to housing/transportation on the island.  Been hitting up craigslist but since I'm from mainland having tough time.  So many mainlanders come and go that no one will give me a chance (housing).  Anyone know of reasonably priced transportation; maybe got a friend trying to sell a truck.  Figure I'd take my chances and ask my community for a little help.

Bob sent a Sea Grant document for our review on HCG use on Chinese Catfish.  Here it is:

Bob Howerton is working to get some CTAHR workshops to come to Maui, and has brought some excellent ones to us in the past.  Thank you, Bob.

This one is on the use of HCG in fish hatcheries.  I am not familiar with HCG, so does anyone have any *substantiated* opinions to share on this (no hearsay please).  Here is the pdf of the workshop on Oahu.

Hi Larry,
Talked with Clyde about holding this workshop on Maui, told him it would be pretty expensive for anyone from Maui County to attend.  He is open to it if we can get 8-10 participants.  Could you post this on the Maui aquaponics gardening site to get the word out?  I will pass it on to my network as well.  HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is used to induce maturation and spawning in a number of fish including Chinese catfish, one of the most expensive fish at fish markets.  I have held a number of workshops about catfish spawning over the years but unfortunately no one has started up a small business selling catfish fingerlings here on island. Hope all is well and thanks in advance.

Hi Folks

If you know of folks who are using or plan to use HCG please have them come to the workshop on March 31.  If they do not attend they will need to find their own means of acquiring the prescription drug for use.

Only once in the past year have I seen blue barrels offered on Craigslist, but you could try doing a "wanted" posting for them and cross your fingers.
