Just starting out, the biggest problem was finding out where to buy the parts needed to construct an aquaponics system on Maui.  Of course, ordering online is always an option, but the shipping cost…Continue

I was wondering if anybody on Maui has been having the same problem as I'm having here. I just lost an entire crop of cucumbers, pumpkins, and gourds this week. I have been told it is fruit flies…Continue

FYI.  The big picture.  Bees pollinate our crops and aid in production.

On Friday, March 23 at 5:30 pm, Michael Andree of the Bee Informed Partnership and Lauren Rusert, Technician with the Hawai‘i Apiary Program, will give a public talk about their work and the current status of honey bees in Hawai‘i.  This event will take place at Maui Community College, Ka Lama 103.

The Bee Informed Partnership (BIP) is an extension project that is collecting data from beekeepers across the country with the goal of determining management practices that reduce colony loss.   The project has many                                 co-investigator partners around the country and has been funded with $5 million over five years by the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.  In 2011, BIP team members joined Hawai‘i Apiary Program staff to include queen                 breeders on the Kona coast in the BIP program and Andree will share information about how individual beekeepers can participate.

Mike Andree has worked with honey bees since 2007 with top programs at both Pennsylvania State University and University of California Cooperative Extension.  His experience is broad, including cooperating with queen breeders and                 beekeepers, sampling thousands of colonies around the United States, and performing honey bee autopsies.  Mike is currently working with the Bee Informed Partnership out of California as a Research Scientist where he helps queen                 breeders and beekeepers assess colonies.  Lauren Rusert graduated from Penn State University where she received a BS degree in Agricultural Science.  For three years there, she worked as a field technician for the honey bee pesticide         research lab and then interned for a semester in Brazil working with Africanized bees.  She has been the Apiary Technician with the Hawai‘i Apiary Program         since summer 2011.

You have received this message because you signed up with the Hawai`i Apiary Program to be notified about bee events on Maui - please let me know if you would like to be removed from our email list.

Kind of a dumb question to have asked on the forum, I know the questions that needed answers to evaluate this. Thanks Larry for listing them. I will send this link and see if I can get them on here. Too much info to work with on sketchy cell phone conversations. =) Thanks too for the video on Mari's Gardens. Watched 1/2 of it sitting in Marmac's parking lot, almost too good to stop.

What are his water chemistry readings?  Ammonia, pH, kH, Nitrites, Nitrates, Dissolved Oxygen, chlorine, salinity, and water temperature?  I heard that some places up country also have chloramine in their water, which is bad for fish.  What is the quality of the water - clear, murky, any algae problems?

Ust got off the phone with a friend in Kokomo that has a new system cycling. He got some of the fish from Ed in Kahakuloa at the same time as I did. Mine are mostly smaller ones, but in four different systems, one of which is just a barrel for a temporary home. Mine are all doing ok and will eat 2x aday or more if I let them, but his are dealing with a slimy coating and more sluggish. His ph seems and beside an air pump moving water he has an air pump just for oxygen. Any ideas?

On Oahu, Mari's Gardens run by Fred Lau.  Here's a really interesting video if you haven't seen it already.  Let's see if this works...

Olomana is a good one for sure.  I interned there.  Not sure of any other setups on the island though.  I would just call ahead of time and make sure someone will be there for tours.  Sometimes they have a lot of stuff going on and are off property but they should have someone there if it is a Saturday.

Still interested. I checked & I Joined the association back in December as a dues paying member. Haven't gotten anything official & not sure there is a card or something. Need to call a few people still.
Off the subject, looking to visit Olomana Gardens Saturday when I take my grandkids back to Oahu. Wondering about other spots to visit too. Just have Saturday daytime, but would like to have alternate or additional places in mind.

right on, that's a good lead.  I will check it out.  Are there still people who want to start the Maui branch of the aquaponics association?  We were talking about it last week but haven't really heard if anyone else wants to participate.

Kula Nursery has 50 gallon barrels that had Greek peppers in them for $32.99. A Google search will get you a picture of them; they have screw on lids...
