Just starting out, the biggest problem was finding out where to buy the parts needed to construct an aquaponics system on Maui. Of course, ordering online is always an option, but the shipping cost…Continue

Dear Workshop Participants,
This announcement is of a planned workshop that is scheduled for November 12, 2011 at Windward Community College. All details have not be finalized but we wanted to let all of you know ahead of time. The workshop will be combined with HAAA’s annual meeting and should not be confused with HAAA’s annual conference. The HAAA annual business meeting is a required event for HAAA and will also be used to recruit new members and for old members to renew their membership.
Please note again that all of the details (e.g., workshop fee, final agenda) have not been finalized at this time. A full announcement with all the details will be forthcoming soon.
Mahalo,
Joan Ako

UPDATE ON THE WORKSHOP: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES OF SOIL-LESS FARMING IN HAWAII
Because of the overwhelming interest (150++) in the upcoming workshop, organizers have expanded the number of seats that are available for the workshop. This means that there are still seats available and if you know of folks who are interested in attending please let them know that there is still room. For those who have contacted the workshop organizers but HAVE NOT PAID their fees, please do so as soon as possible to insure that you will have a seat at the workshop.
On a separate note, there has been a lot of confusion recently regarding Food Safety Certification and another reason for attending the workshop is to be informed regarding the latest status regarding food safety certification that will be covered by Jim Hollyer. He recently forwarded a message from the State Department of Health that will help clarify the situation (see below). However, to get the most up to date information please encourage all those who are interested to come to the workshop.

Subject: Aquaponics
Howzit Jim,
Per our phone conversation this afternoon, the Dept. of Health has no rules against, or any prohibition to, using fish detritus (waste) as a nutrient source for raw agricultural commodities (RAC) as is done in “Aquaponics”. I understand this term to mean the practice of using live, usually edible, fish that are fed and raised in the water that is used as the primary medium for the growth of the RAC. There is no prohibition either, regarding the use of the fish as a food source if harvested as such. At this time we have no immediate plans to create any new rules regarding “aquaponics”, but this does not prevent us from regulating any RAC growers in the future, depending on the direction of the DOH and the new Federal Rules regarding produce. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding this matter.
Aloha,
Peter Oshiro

Please join me in welcoming Bob Howerton to the group. Most of you have worked with him before. He coordinated the last Water Quality Workshop at UH-Maui College, and will work at putting on additional workshops depending on interest. Having him here will hopefully make the resources of the UH Sea Grant program and his knowledge and experience more accessible to us. Let's all work together at making Maui more sustainable. Thank you to Bob for joining.
Does anyone know anything about:
Brooks' Fresh Water Fish Holding Ponds Inc.
44 Waonahele Place
in Haiku ???? Mahalo!
Larry (Bob): Will there be additional workshops between July and September?
Thanks!
