Monsanto and the other GMO companies are leasing land, from Kamehameha Schools, on all islands for experiments and seed production for their distribution.
Aloha everyone on Maui

Are you getting that rain we just had. I didn't fair to bad as I have flat land. The fish did real well as well as the plants. Plants on land get beaten up by the rain.

Have any of you given any thought to joining the Aquqponic Association.I am interested in what you think about the idea. Right now I am the Regional Director for Hawaii and we need a branch on Maui. I am interested in candid answers so if you want to send me a personal note feel free…

I was wondering if anybody on Maui has been having the same problem as I'm having here. I just lost an entire crop of cucumbers, pumpkins, and gourds this week. I have been told it is fruit flies stinging my vines and fruit. The plants will grow fine for a while then out of the blue the start dropping branches and dying. On closer inspection I have found worms inside the…

There are two different worms inside. The larger green one is plainly visible but there is a smaller whitish one too. The inside of the stem is filled with worms and worm poop.

I'm not finding any good information as to what species of bug this even is and how to deal with it. The local farm and garden store said to spray dipel but that is not effective when the worms are inside of the plant. Has anybody seen this kind of thing? Any tips?
Bugs!tag:aquaponicgardening.ning.com,2011-02-10:4778851:Topic:418162011-02-10T05:34:58.779ZJenniferhttps://aquaponicgardening.ning.com/profile/JenniferJacobs
We have an 9 month old 80sqft DWC system in Haiku... and recently we got white flies and aphids! Murray Hallam, Australia's aqua guru, recommends spraying a molasses and water mixture. Does anyone have any experience with dealing with these bugs, or others?

Just starting out, the biggest problem was finding out where to buy the parts needed to construct an aquaponics system on Maui. Of course, ordering online is always an option, but the shipping cost will always be excessively high, although some vendors will offer free shipping for large orders. The best bet would be to find a supplier on Maui that will sell their goods FOB.

OK, I just finished building the Micro 128 in my backyard in Kahului. It has a 32 ft trough and a 300 gallon Rubbermaid tub. About 1250 gallons of tap water was put in, and the MD2 has been turned on to cycle the water. At this time, I have 1 AP300 air pump with 2 air stones in the fish tank (eventually will have 2), and 2 AP300's driving 4 air stones in the trough (every 8 feet). It took 3 days for the chlorine to gas out.

With the chlorine at zero, I added Proline Ammonium Chloride to bring the ammonia up to 2ppm. Then I added a gallon of Proline nitrifying bacteria to inoculate. All this per the manual.

It's been 6 days since I inoculated the system. Ammonia is still at 2ppm, nitrite and nitrates are still at zero. DO is 8.5. PH is 7.8. I have my hole-less rafts covering my trough, and my fish tank is covered to protect the nitrifying bacteria. The manual says that nitrites should show up in 3 days, and nitrates in 5!

To add some live bacteria, I added gravel from my 100 gallon cycled tank couple of days ago, per an earlier conversation with Rebecca. Still no change. I called Aquatic Eco systems tech support, and Kevin said it should take 4-6 weeks!

Two questions immediately pop up in my mind regarding this: 1) is it worth the cost; and 2) are there alternatives such as our own certifying group.

For growers intending to go commercial, this would definitely be a plus, as you can ask for higher prices. The alternative would be to educate the consumer on what certification actually means, and perhaps come up with our own set of standards and stamp of approval for Maui.

Two certifying agencies that certified the Friendly Aquaponics designs are,

Oregon Tilth: http://tilth.org/ (Certified High Density (HD) system)

and,

Organic Certifiers: http://www.organiccertifiers.com/ (Certified Low Density (LD) system)

In addition, the question of worms (in our grow beds and bio-filters) as a potential source of E-coli came up as a hindrance to certification since this was not part of the original Friendly designs. Rebecca, could you please share some of your findings on that?
The Bio-Filtertag:aquaponicgardening.ning.com,2011-01-25:4778851:Topic:359642011-01-25T07:50:47.000ZJenniferhttps://aquaponicgardening.ning.com/profile/JenniferJacobs

After reading this article, and seeing Nick's volcanic cinder grow bed/bio-filter in operation at Kai Manu, I'm convinced that I need to install a bio-filter (cinders and worms) in my Friendly raft design to supply a wider range of nutrients to my plants. And damn the organic certification! Well maybe not, but maybe we can work with the certifying agency to get this thing accepted.
