Processing fish solids in small aquarium aquaponics

Started by David Palmer. Last reply by John Cubit Nov 14, 2012. 5 Replies

I've been doing a lot of reading on aquaponics, though most of what I can find is about much larger operations. I'm wondering if some of the same problems apply to smaller aquariums and how people…Continue

I haven't been on for awhile as my MonSter had been acting up horribly. I have a kiddie pool in the back yard (in a rental) that has some gold fish in it. I originally got it to put some water lilly…Continue

Just discovered ich on several of my goldfish. How should I go about treating the parasite in an aquaponics system? If I use the typical ich medication, will the plants suffer? I will probably end up…Continue

I'm thinking of using goldfish in my aquaponics system.  For those of you who have chosen to use goldfish, how has your experience been?  Why did you choose goldfish?  Are you glad you chose that…Continue

Hi everyone. Would love to buy goldfish at 23 cents USA. For sprats (very small fish aprox. One inch) it is costing me on average $2.80 US. I have one nice sized goldfish Aprox. 3 inches, behaving like it has been on the Gin all night.. Not sure what to do..Fish is intoxicated and not able to pass the sobriety test. Have looked for hours but can’t find the bottle. The fish is lethargic and not wanting to do much of anything. Then it has a brainwave and tries to head butt the side of the tank.. The other fish not interested at all. I am not used to accepting that I will have a few fish going to that “big gold fish bowl in the sky”.. I will just have to be strong. Plants do not individually make me feel sad when they expire. To a more serious nature. I intend to upload some pictures tracking my history in hydroponics and possibly be able to help others where I can. All members are welcome to ask questions and I will assist to the best of my ability. Aquaponics is new to me but I'm sure my past experience will stand. Meet and greet the fish has been my first task and now building a combination of media and raft growing beds. Looking forward to sharing common areas of concern. Meanwhile I will go back to observing my drunken goldfish. Help is on the way from a friend saying that I may have a case of over feeding. Wind….

Regards John

LOL Richard. I'm picturing your goldfish surfing. Sounds like you started with feeders. Not sure you killed them or they came in 1/2 dead. I went that route to start because I wanted to get everything established before I added in Koi but the goldfish just kept dying on me. found out later that they often come in with disease. Just thought I would mention that in case you were worried about karma.

Hi everyone,

Goldfish. Those little guys we use to cycle our tanks cause they only cost 23 cents each for the big ones! I killed quite a few getting my system going, I bought way too many and acually got more than I paid for. The 4 that are left are some tough little guys.

My system is in my basement, a sort of learning hybrid thing now. Up until last week it was very similar to Emma's. Beds on top of the tank, slow draining back into the tanks with holes in the bottom of the beds. The aeration was great.
the fish seemed to love the rain. The salad we ate was better than what I have ever grown out in the heat of the sun.
But of course this is aquaponics. It could be better, it could be bigger. If I just tweak this or move that :) So, now my system is a 30 FT and 20 gallon ST. There are 30 gallons of growbed and a homemade tricklefilter with some mechanical filtration at the top.
Flood and drain growbeds with bell siphons. And way too much pump. I ended up with a eco-396 it is recirculating the fishtank about 7 times per hour! I was going to divert more water after the system recycled (was hoping just changing beds and adding filter would make a quick one ) but noticed a funny thing.
Goldfish love to surf!! They play in the flow from the beds, and seem to really love to feed when the current is moving the food.

I want to move to a bigger, faster growing fish at at some point, This is still my learning system, and I have so much more to learn :) The goldfish are a pretty cool little fish though. Kinda like the little guys.
