Así es Roxana, las muestras que me traje tuve que darles una lavada. Lo bueno es que cuando están limpias es fácil saberlo porque ya el agua no sale roja ;-) Igual el otro tio de lastre también hay que lavarlo. Suerte igualmente!

Hola Juan! lo que le cuento es que mi esposo ya fue y me llego con los seis sacos que necesitaba, a lo mejor se encontraron! en mi caso too late, que Dios nos acompañe! yo leí que si se usa con frecuencia y el señor Australiano lo recomienda. si sé que tenemos que darle una gran lavada a las piedritas por que vienen con mucho sedimento. Suerte! ya dimos un paso más!

As an offhand guess, Obsidian might be a good choice because it is rather chemically inert. But one possible down side might be it's sharp edges.
Typically any "river rock" that is predominantly quarts works well. How available is it in CR?

I found a quarry ( Tajo Carhmi) located in San Pedro de Poas where they sell red lava rock the size of a coffee bean! specifically as a growing media for hydroponic systems. A sac of 40 kilos costs 2.260 colones ($5)!!!. Or a square meter costs 16 400 colones ($32.4). Their phone numer is 24486848.

Thanks Roger! I found out that our red lava rock is a kind of scoria. I read that it is been used in aquaponic systems.! So definitely we will use the red lava rock! As of yet I don t its price.

Hi Roxana, in my opinion, you should still take a sample and test is effects on pH. Just because it is used in hydroponics does not necesarilly mean it is a good fit for aquaponics. In AP, the media is submerged much more than in hydroponics, and so any leaching effects are quite possibly amplified. Take a bucket of water, and test the pH before and a few days after adding some sample. My two cents. FB

I saw this thread about scoria (volcanic rock) here http://aquaponicscommunity.com/forum/topics/using-pumice-1?commentI.... I sent an email to TCLynx, maybe there are some updates. The link mention in the thread www.oregon.gov/DHS/ph/envtox/fishfact.shtml seems dead for now!
Maybe some have updates too. It will be a shame here in Costa Rica not being able to use scoria: there are tons of it all around!

Yes Greg, it is pozzolana. So I feel very sad because I was planning to use hydroton, but it is very expensive here! then Iwas very happys knowing that pozzolana had been used in fish tank and hydroponics systems!. And now what will be the best growing media! cheap!
