I live in Atenas, Costa Rica. My husband and I will be starting an aquaponic system at home. Our greenhouse will be 4 meters x 6 meters. I am planning to use half barrels as a plant bed. At least 8 plant beds, my question is how many fish tilapia do we need to put in the fish tank. I want to grow lettuce, tomatoes, basil, cucumber, red pepper, culantro, celery, onions, mustard etc...thanks a lot of your help!

I am in the process of building an aquaponics operation in Chinandega, Nicaragua to help  feed poor school children.  I have built a 4'x4'x60' concrete tank and I have a solar powered well that pumps 10,000 gpd on a sunny day.  I am presently designing a greenhouse to grow  the vegetables in.  I would like to swap info. with anyone else doing something similar.  I am a volunteer with a US nonprofit called Amigos for Christ   www.amigosforChrist.org

Are you familiar with the work that was done by New Alechmey Institute Costa Rica that was done years ago by Bill McLarney?

Agreed 100% with you Kevin! Another challenge, is that here in Costa Rica that grid is not very reliable, which means this: all aquaponics system will need to have a backup. There is no way out! Also these back up system will need to be as cheap as possible, which is by itself, another challenge. I'm working on that. If you have any suggestions, links about how to create cheap backup for aquaponics systems please feel free to share this information.
