Hello,
We are doing our research to start a commercial aquaponics business currently. We are based in Louisville, KY and I have been trying to find other businesses similar to what we want to do in KY but there is nothing! I am a little stumped as to what we need to do in order to sell the food in terms of Health department and any other regulations. I realize that it may be state to state. If anyone has any experience about their process I would be very interested to hear about it.
Thanks
You might look into some more permaculture type things concerning the ponds. It may be difficult to really incorporate large ponds into a recirculating aquaponics design but they may well be a good place to have a bit of variety with non aquaponic low impact aquaculture. Perhaps some cage culture?
The "other buildings" might be fine places for fish tanks or food processing but you definitely don't want to mess with growing plants inside buildings other than greenhouses if you can avoid it. Natural sunlight is always going to be more cost effective than electric lighting provided the greenhouse design can keep your greenhouse warm enough for your desired purposes without lots of heating costs. If you go with fish that can handle cooler winters and go with plants that don't mind some cool during winter, then all you have to do is keep the water from freezing and it can function year round. However if you want to grow tilapia and tomatoes through the winter, it will be a different story trying to keep things warm.
good Luck
I posted this in Colorado Aquapon but thought it might be good to post here as well. So we originally started out with the idea to create an aquaponics system for our homeschool group. But the idea has now evolved. My nephew is in HI as an intern at Friendly's and we have gathered with some other like minded people from across the country and we are creating an aquaponics, sustainable community with a mind, body, spirit healing center and education center on a ranch located in the foothills. We are definitely excited about the transition in ideas and how it has all grown over the past several months. I would love to get any ideas and advice on the systems to install for the aquaponics. We are incorporating what Friendly's is doing but would love some input from our cold weather friends. We are looking at greenhouses and uses of other buildings on the property. There are several existing ponds on the property and there are thoughts to somehow incorporate a few of those. We will be supporting not only the residences in the community but locally provide food through a CSA membership and also to local food banks. I know many of you have had thoughts in this direction and/or are on your way to doing something commercially around the area. We feel very strongly in collaboration and would love any input and/or thoughts on how we can help each other make each of our aquaponics visions a reality.
With gratitude, Tee
